We had never heard of this beautiful island until we bought our boat. But Lefkada (also known as Lefkas) has blown us away with her beauty and we've fallen in love with this stunning Greek island.

Lefkada Town, Lefkada, Greece

Lefkada experiences hot, dry summers and mild winters typical of a Mediterranean climate. If you love the sun, the best time to visit Lefkada is in summer, from June to September.

The best time to visit Lefkada if you’re hoping for cooler weather is during the winter. The temperature is comfortable, with lows of 10˚C and highs of 13˚C.

❤️
Our favorite time are the shoulder months of June and September as it less busy, more affordable and has fantastic weather.

🤑 Handling your money

Bring some cash with you from your home currency. You can exchange this at the airport or in Lefkada Town. Its quite rare these days to find places You’ll see that don’t accept credit cards. However, you’ll need cash for public transport like the buses, so its always handy to have some on you.

Every time you use an ATM in Lefkada, you will be charged, ranging from €2 to €4 euros. Therefore try to pay with a credit card whenever you can and save the cash for local venues.

📍 How to get there

There are a number of travel options to get to Lefkada. Depending on where you're coming from one or more of the options below will make sense. Lets have a look at each.

✈️ By Air

The island of Lefkada has no airport; the closest one is Aktion International Airport, situated in Preveza. It is situated approximately 20km from Lefkada Town.

Aktion Airport offers several European destinations during the high season, but fewer flights will run during the low season. There aren’t any direct flights from Athens either, so consider this if you are coming from Athens. However, there are domestic flights from other Greek islands, such as Zakynthos and Corfu, operated by Sky Express.

🚙 By Car

The island of Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a small bridge. This is Lefkada’s significant advantage in that you can enjoy the beautiful beaches of the Ionian Sea, but you don’t have to take a boat to get there.

The bridge opens every hour from 08:00 to 22:00 for the ships to enter. During the night from 23:00 to 07:00, the bridge opens whenever there is a ship.

If you’re coming from Athens, hiring a car and driving down could be an option. This will take around four-five hours. Cost of a taxi will be roughly €250-€300 but its worth negotiating if you decide to do this.

🚌 By Bus

Getting from Athens to Lefkada by public bus is possible. The journey takes around five hours, and there are several daily buses. Make sure to book your seat in advance, especially in high season, to guarantee your spot.

One-way ticket: €32,00 per person
Child under 8: €17,00
Return ticket with open date: €62,00 per person (valid for one month)

🌊 By Sea

No ferries are operating between Athens and Lefkada. But there are ferries from the surrounding islands, Kefalonia, Meganisi and Ithaca.

The two ports of Lefkada are Nydri (located on the east coast) and Vasiliki (situated on the south of the island). They operate ferries to the surrounding islands.

⛺️ Where to stay

There's some fantastic accommodation options on the island of Lefkada ranging from budget rooms to spectacular villas with everything between.

We found that booking.com had some of the best options available, so we'd recommend booking via them. Below are a few recommendations we've stayed at.

🌼 Lefkada Town

  • Villa on the clouds
Great for a holiday with family or friends. Stunning view of Lefkada town, a small kitchen and access to a swimming pool.

🥗 Where to eat and drink

Below we've compiled a list of our favorite restaurants in both Lefkada town and Nirdri where we've spent most of our time. By no means is this an exhaustive list

🍴 Lefkada Town

🥗 Taverna EYTYXIA

Authentic Greek food cooked to perfection at a reasonable price. Situated in a lovely side street of Lefkada town.

🥯 Karma

Located in the city centre, we had a lovely brunch, but they are open till late.

🍷 Mavros Lagos

A wine bar in the historical centre of Lefkada, where you can taste Greek wines whilst listening to Cuban music.

🔴 One Red Dot

It is hidden in an alley, but they serve tasty desserts and cocktails.

☕ Coffee Island

A perfect place to get good quality coffee from a good selection of roasts and beans.

🐟 Maistros

A must-go! It is based in the small town of Agios Nikitas, which is a 20-minute drive from Lefkada town. It is a small, cute restaurant where you have a nice view of the beach. Delicious homemade Greek food. We recommend the whole fish with fried potatoes, but there are also plenty of vegetarian options.

🍽️ Nydri

🥖 MyBakery

The best spanakopita and sourdough bread.

🇮🇹 Zio Fede Ristorante Italiano Lefkada

An Italian restaurant right on the beach with a sea view. They serve delicious pizzas until 5:00 p.m., and in the evening, you can enjoy a à la carte dining experience.

If you're a seafood lover, we highly recommend trying their grigliata mista - a mixed grilled fish dish for two people. Trust us, it's absolutely amazing!

🍃 Argon

A restaurant with a beautiful garden to sit in, which is perfect for a more intimate dinner. It is a little more pricey, but the food is worth it.

🍟 My Way

An excellent place for delicious, cheap gyros or souvlaki with chips. Quick and tasty!

🐢 Taverna Elena

A 15-minute drive from Nydri town, a cosy bayside restaurant. Great for seafood or local Greek food. You might even spot the local turtle that lives in Vliho Bay!

💨 Taverna Oasis

If you rent a car or you bring your own, you should visit Taverna Oasis. Taverna Oasis is a lovely restaurant with tasty Greek food. You could even watch the sunset from the restaurant. It can be quite windy and a little chilly since the restaurant is on a hill, but they provide blankets.

💻 Co-working space

Unfortunately, the only co-working space on the island of Lefkada has yet to open its doors since COVID-19.

During the first weeks of summer, we worked a lot on our sailboat, however, it became to hot for a laptops and our boat battery started to suffered. This left us with hot laptops, dead batteries, and a frustrated Iz and Lau.

Therefore our solution was to find the best cafes and restaurants to work from which we've added below.

👨🏽‍💻 Lefkada Town

  • Ristretto Espresso Bar
  • Zimis Dough Workshop (although we were not too impressed by the food)

👩🏽‍💻 Nydri

  • Cafe Di Paris
  • Taverna Elena
  • The quay cafe & bar
  • Sailinn Beach Club
We'd recommend buying a laptop stand fan and a small fan for yourself as many of the options above didn't have aircon!

💥 Things to do in Lefkada (when you're not working)

We could write a separate article specifically about all the things that you can do on this beautiful island but to summarize we've compiled a list of of favorites below.

🌼 1. Visit Lefkada Town

Wander through the pretty streets of Lefkada town. We got ourselves some data plans with Cosmote. We would recommend that if working remotely. Check out this article for more information. Pefkoulia Beach is beautiful but could be a bit seaweedy depending on the wind.

🦑 2. Spend the Day at Beach Agios Nikitas

A 20-minute drive from Lefkada town, small yet beautiful with a cute town, lovely beach and amazing local food. Visit the restaurant Maistros, and you’ll be treated to the best home-cooked food. The whole fish was our favourite.

🐚 3. Visit Nydri

Nydri is a small village on the east side of Lefkada. It is a beautiful village with mountains in the background and a lovely beach, close to some small islands. You could spend the day exploring the town or relax at the beach.

🏝️ 4. Explore the Nearby Islands from Nydri

Rent a boat from Diavlos Marine and have a great time at sea whilst exploring the nearby islands.

🚴🏽‍♀️ 5. Explore the Waterfalls

Rent a bicycle in Nydri and go for a 15-minute bike ride to visit the waterfalls in Nydri. Depending on the amount of rain, there will be water or no water. But the ride itself and the area are worth checking out.

🏖️ 6. Egremni Beach

Our favourite beach in Lefkada. The white sand, crystal blue water and high cliffs make it a pretty special place. Egremni Beach is one one-hour drive from Lefkada town. There is, unfortunately, no bus heading that way.

The nearest village close to Egremni Beach is Vasiliki. You could take a bus from Lefkada town to Vasiliki and get a taxi, although we aren’t sure how much that would cost.

The beach is beautiful, but you must be prepared because the road could be challenging. It’s a walk uphill, almost 1.3 km on foot and nearly 400 stairs. But it is definitely worth the sweat.

🎣 7. Vasiliki

A beautiful enchanting fishing village by the sea. If you’re into windsurfing, it’s definitely a must-visit. Or if it’s not your thing, it is also fun to watch. Only half an hour’s drive to the famous beach Egremni or Porto Katsiki. Crystal blue water to swim.

🌳 8. Town Karia

If you are up for hiring a car or bringing your own, you could drive to the charming mountainous village Karia. It is a cute village with narrow cobbled streets and in the cеnter of the villagе аnd alоng the main streеt there аrе many big plane treеs. Lentil soup is a speciality in this town, so try some while visiting.

⛱️ 9. Porto Katsiki

Another fantastic beach with turquoise blue water and white cliffs. You might want to avoid the high season (June – Aug) as this beach will be packed with people.

🪂 10. Kathisma Beach

Go paragliding at Kathisma beach and experience Lefkada from above. We booked a tandem flight with FlyFeel Lefkada and would recommend them. The instructors are kind and professional, and the flight is a beautiful experience. After the paragliding, you could end your day with a cocktail at Amente Restaurant & Cocktail bar.
